Note: all comments are live and not based on going back to clarify segments. Meant to imitate a live viewing, with minor point adjustments allowed throughout.

OSU Genesis - Scooby Doo
Head tilts were oddly executed - nakhra?
Jhoomar stiff but I like the steps. Needs swag. I like how light everyone is on their feet
By 3 or 4th bhangra song, i started raising the standard for better form.
Thought they were gonna do a door gimmick running around opening doors. Some prop malfunctions.

Mohini - Women in the military
Sync off for leads (FSL not with team)
Oh wait it might be the person who was stage left from the frontline
Girls looking at each other for moves
Love the music slowdown
Haha mohini mix references entertaining
"Tires” /snow tubes were oddly used. Very exposed and not synced

UNC Chalkaa - Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Great crispness/energy
Musicality on pointttt
Chalkaa has great bhangra
Layering is decent
Random thought: what if the first banner runners were because the team needed to switch sides on stage
Really like the saap timings with the music

Michigan Izzat - The Jungle Book
Dang stage set up
Cool voice over
Choreo feels under par for the comp
Really like the acting, though
Nice scooby shout out
Really cool interpretation of jungle book
Cool routine

USC Zeher - Father/Daughter
Love the theme integration/storyline
Opening skit is my favorite in years
First team that really makes me want to learn a new style to understand the performance more
Lots of fluid movements, noted a lack of snap/power moves, but it fits within a coherent style
Confused by appearance of daughter during father’s solo
Love it

INTERMISSION

Case Kismat - Maya's Story
“We should get her a gift to make her feel more at home” -> hollister?
“Is everything okay, Maya?”
Bhangra form is alright, but fundamentals are off/Arm energy in bhangra is low.
“You’re not my parents” - good choice of words to put on backdrop
Formations are subtly engaging
Slow to get up off of ground from rolls
Leg energy in general seems low - not sure if choreo or execution
You’re right Maya. We’re not your parents, and you’re not our daughter, but we’ll always be family.”

Chicago Adaa - Theory of Everything
I wonder why a FSR chair was empty for jodi segment
Beautiful staging - acting as it incorporated into choreography into formations
Crisp movements and execution, choreography was subtly athletic
Probably best stage movement of the night so far - felt effortless
Exactly the kind of performance for writing a "shine factor" instead of an "overall impression" category

BU Jalwa - Mean Girls
Katie from Africa
“Here’s the plan” - did not lead to a plan
Liked the general execution of styles
s/o for doing bhangra but not doing 5 minutes of bhangra
Best jhoomar segment so far
Ending confused me

Michigan Manzil - Jumanji
Hope stunt/tumbler is okay
Bad lighting cue choices. Fades good, blackouts risky
“Shing” musicality off
Light up props are very exposed for angle and move sync
Crown drop
Many prop malfunctions
Good energy consistency throughout

IMPORTANT For the ranking below, I selected based on filling out the rubric I wrote: https://ddn-forum.herokuapp.com/forum/multi-circuit-issues/the-sapna-and-raaz-method-rubric-construction and allowing points to place where they would. During a deliberation, I would allow point adjustments, but the important takeaway is that this is based on the prioritization I wrote into my rubric using multipliers. This is NOT a raw ranking (just watching the show and placing by feeling) and it is NOT a ranking using the Legends rubric. That can (and should) explain discrepancies between a casual viewer and my placings (or my placings and any number of judges/experienced dancers. Everybody looks for something different).

Personal Ranking:

  1. Chicago Adaa
  2. UNC Chalkaa
  3. Michigan Izzat
  4. USC Zeher
  5. OSU Genesis
  6. Michigan Manzil
  7. BU Jalwa
  8. Case Kismat
  9. Texas Mohini

Reviews from livestream viewing:

Michigan TAAL
Bhangra is clean and athletic. Not form based
FSRG messed up bhangra timing almost entirely
Song selection was okay, but english was better part
ending not strong
(short comments because of livestream buffering and camera angle)

Zahanat
Don't like bhangra form
Decent start, but steps were simple
always 1-3 people missing steps
hip hop much stronger segment
cool burst out
jugni needs substantial work
fog machin unbalanced
cool block spin
"Face the dean alone?" great transition for a march/walk in
be sure to bend fully, esp. for front of stage
last bhangra segment was best of three but still area for easiest/most substantial improvement
Like the finale jackets

UT Saaya
classical sync off, but choreo okay
like the bolly seg has a lot of what i like to see
bolly costumes pretty. White shirts felt odd contrast to that
Hip hop was short but got the point across and was musical
hypeeeee transition (idk why it hit as well as it did on prima facie viewing but it did). best bhangra so far by a large margin
Double dhamaals were very weak though
Jugni with daangs was a great move, and the choreo feels true to circuit
make sure staffs are synced for exit off stage

UCB Azaad
Lots of hype/hot moments
only sync issues were at the end of 8counts
Costumes were great impression pick
Choreo and costume integration was really cool
spin on ground was awesome
Had an entertainment/shine factor that really drew me into the performance in a way that I didn't need to keep track to know where I wanted to score them on categories.
Very impressive routine. Felt like definite trophy to me

BSB
Good start
FCRB missing steps
very fusion-y
missed the saap gimmick
whoa bhangra form in final segment was fire
…until jugni
And now it's just modern bhangra circuit bhangra. Not bad, but certainly not pushing the margins of excellence
Lots of bhangra in routine, and executed at a very high level for bolly. Waiting for a team that does folk bhangra to be on par in execution

UCR Afsana
Like the barfi! segment
Felt like a great contrast to other routines
More buffering issues, but the storyline didn't feel as compelling as other routines of the night
Liked costumes and a lot of choreo choices

SJSU Sahaara
Opening sync great, then drops
Girl skipped steps recovered decently
Energetic beginning
I liked the expressiveness of dancers, but it doesn't feel synced to the standard it needs to be
Contemp segment and story is good

Lashkara
Theme execution on point
energy slightly lower than i would have liked
but the choice paid off for sync - good reminder that BALANCED routines are more likely to succeed
style selection was good
music selection was great
I think the execution of storytelling really stood out. Nothing felt forced, and the revelation was efficiently communicated with short(er-than-expected) voiceovers
Top two team for me so far

Wisconsin Surma
Super bolly set-planning of good Raas segment
Bhangra bounce off sync but folk feel is there
too many dancers default into fusion bhangra but still better
second best bhangra of night after Saaya
Odd choice to mismatch music with style imediately before a style comparison in-theme
Would have wanted some visual/choreographical representation of dyslexia as it's felt by students
Bhangra on fast side but second segment also keeping form standards
middle back boy needs to watch arms, though
Finally decent jugni
Best bhangra of night - no weak spots - balanced
cute ending, not hardhitting
Too reliant on voiceovers

USC Zeher
Liked the theme integration
Music selection ++
Intro skit was EVERYTHING, though
2 barfi! songs in a night my life must be going right
At times felt like sides of stage dancers didn't have the physicality for more intense/energetic segments

Personal Ranking:
1 UC Berkeley Azaad
2 Lashkara at UC Davis
3/4 Wisconsin Surma
4/3 Broad Street Baadshahz (3 and 4 were so close that a deliberation could have shifted this either way for me, but I picked Surma based on raw score and that also came from execution of form and choreo for individual dance styles)
5 USC Zeher
6 UT Saaya
7 SJSU Sahaara
8 UC Berkeley Zahanat
9 UCR Afsana
10 Michigan TAAL
